Brandon Phillips said he would play with one leg against St. Louis.
His reason I hate the Cardinals. All they do is (complain) and moan
about everything, all of them. Theyre little (expletives), all of
em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love
the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear -- I hate the
Cardinals.
The scuffle began as Phillips stepped into the batters
box during the bottom of the first inning at Great American Ballpark
and began to jaw with St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina. Phillips
tried to tap his bat to the shin guards of Molina and home-plate
umpire Mark Wegner in a friendly gesture. When he attempted to do
so, Molina kicked at his bat, then took off his mask and challenged
the All-Star second baseman face-to-face.
Carpenter, who got pinned
against the backstop screen, wound up with several scrapes across
his lower back and right side. I turn around and Ive got Cueto
kicking me in the back with his spikes, Carpenter said. Its super
unprofessional. I dont know where he learned how to fight. Cardinals
catcher Jason LaRue had some facial damage from the kicks and
sustained a slight concussion, according to La Russa.
